While installing Windows XP Mode on my laptop today, I encountered something fairly odd:
After a the installation I was greeted with the well known XP starting sound. As always, Windows (the virtualized one) wanted to install updates. Due to my happiness (I finally have an XP "machine" I can use for debugging some code) I allowed the updates and waited for the virtual machine to reboot. After this reboot however, I saw a screen like this:
First of all, it was weird to have this window letting you choose a browser open in IE. As well, the little icon on the left side of the desktop hints at an already installed IE. At the same time, you can (re-)install IE using this window. (Seems a bit pointless to me)
So I installed Opera, just to see what would happen (the vm was only supposed to be for debugging, but I wanted to know what would happen next). After installing Opera (of course IE first warned me that Opera might be dangerous) I got to the second interesting screen:
All that had changed after installing Opera was the addition of the Opera icon. Neither IE nor the "Browser Choice" icon disappeared...
So all in all, it seems like this was a great way to give users a choice which browser they want to use.</sarcasm>
P.S.: This does not prevent IE from asking you to "fix" the setting determining your default browser.
P.P.S.: Yes, there ARE ways to install a browser onto a computer not involving IE... (especially on a virtual machine)
